NBA legend Reggie Miller who won a Gold Medal with Team USA at the 1996 Summer Olympics, made 5 NBA All-Star games, and was inducted into the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012 has emerged as an elite athlete in a new sport. Miller competed last weekend in the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships and finished 9th in his age group.

The 2026 USA Cycling MTB National Championships were held on Sunday in Roanoke, Virgnia and it is an absolutely brutal and taxing back country multi-lap race across a 53.2-mile course covering rugged country. All of mountain biking‘s elite riders were on hand this year and Reggie Miller proved he can hang with the best.

On Instagram and Threads, the TNT analyst and Indiana Pacers legend shared his triumphant results. Reggie Miller wrote “HOLY MOLY!!! Now I get why @usacycling Nationals are a BIG DEAL!! What an experience and vibe, so many people to thank but I will first start with the results which I’m kind of shocked.”

He continued, writing “Coming into Nationals when I knew I would be going against the best 60+ year olds across the nation my objective was simple, I didn’t want to come in LAST.. There were 24 guys in my category and I finished 9th, I can’t believe I got a Top 10 finish 😳!!” … Reggie Miller was born a gifted athlete and has maintained fitness for his entire lifetime. It is hard to imagine a world where he would finish in last place among athletes his age in any sport outside of weight lifting.

Describing the Mountain Biking National Championships experience, Miller continued, writing “By far this was the hardest MTB race I’ve done, the course was so challenging, 40 miles and 5K of long climbs with techy descents, the terrain was next level, exposed tree roots pretty much 80%, rocks galore and the chefs kiss, my last 35-40 minutes me and everyone behind me had to finish in down pouring rain which made the roots, rocks and trail so slippery. Mentally you were already exhausted 3.5 hours in and now you had to concentrate even more not to crash or slip off the mountain trails.”

Here is the big fella, all 6’7″ of him, crossing the finish line in the rain after more than 6 hours and 20 minutes of racing:

Miller is not new to the sport. He previously served on the USA Cycling Board of Directors in 2020 and spearheaded diversity and youth throughout the sport of cycling.

How’d he do?

60-year-old Reggie Miller competes in the Male 60-64 Masters age bracket. He finished in 9th out of 24 in his age group, a massive accomplishment considering these are the best of the best in his age group.

Reggie’s first segment was completed in a time of 1:06:39. He then completed segments 2 and 3 in times of 2:08:54 and 56:02. It is

What’s next for Reggie Miller? Now that he’s mastered endurance mountain biking… Could a triathlon be in his future? 50ish miles is roughly the distance of the cycling portion in an Ironman 70.3 race. Should we be on the lookout for Reggie in the pool and running on the road cross training?

On Threads, Reggie shared that fans can purchase his custom ‘BOOM BABY’ racing shirt from Castelli Cycling. I’ve got Castelli shorts, a bib, and a tri suit. They’re among the best in the business so Reggie has picked up a fantastic partner for his gear here. Proceeds on purchases of his ‘BOOM BABY’ racing shirt go toward the Equal Justice Initiative.

Mountain Biking and cycling in general is a fantastic way to maintain cardio fitness and build leg muscles while reducing the pounding impact from running. As a tall individual, Reggie almost certainly deals with fatigue after long runs. Cycling is a perfect sport for him and he’s evidently crushing it.
