Roger Goodell is reportedly in talks about yet another contract extension to stay on as the NFL commissioner. This would mark the fourth extension the soon-to-be 63-year-old has received.

Ben Fischer and John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal were the first to report the news, saying that a new deal could be in place over the coming months.

The NFL team owners’ desire to renew Goodell’s contract marks a big vote of confidence in his leadership through the pandemic and can be seen as a sign of his own growing confidence and security in the role since the last deal he signed in 2017.

“He’s at the top of his game right now,” said one owner. “Why would we want him walking out the door?”

Goodell was originally elected by the owners in 2006 and received extensions in 2009, 2012, and again in 20717.

Commissioners in every sport aren’t exactly the most likable people as they can not please every fanbase and every city they’re involved with. Having said that, it’s hard to argue against the product Goodell has been able to put forth on the field, especially over the last couple of years.

The NFL has been king, and remains to be king, when it comes to all other major sports in North America.

This didn’t keep some NFL fans from reacting with frustration about the news of Goodell likely signing a new contract sooner rather than later:
