Rory McIlroy missed out on his chance at a US Open win in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday, missing a short putt on the 18th green to bogey his final hole.
As it turns out, that stroke would come back to bite as Bryson DeChambeau sank par to finish one shot up on the leaderboard.
It’s a story that’s played out too many times before for McIlroy, who’s been close to major wins over the years but has ultimately fallen short. Since last winning a major in 2014, he’s finished top five on nine different occasions.
He’d add another just-miss to the list this weekend.
Tied with DeChambeau at -6 upon entering the final hole, McIlroy appeared to set himself up nicely for par. Instead, a lip-out putt led to bogey.

Adding brutal insult to injury, the crowd at Pinehurst began chanting, “USA,” after seeing the putt scoot past the hole. Social media was quick to respond.
“Crowd breaking into a USA Chant after Rory just bogeyed 18 was ruthless.”
“The USA chants during Rory’s last putt are such a disgrace.”
“The crowd chanting ‘USA‘ when Rory missed the putt on 18 was cruel.”
Falling to -5 for his tournament, his fate was sealed when DeChambeau sank a putt for par a few moments later to win the US Open.

Not up for questions after the demoralizing second-place finish, the golfer bailed on a post-round media session and quickly sped off the grounds.
Rory McIlroy will have one more chance to land that elusive major win next month at the Open Championship.
