No view in high school baseball is better than the backdrop at Saint Ignatius College Prep in Chicago. The Wolfpack play with the entire skyline of the city beyond center field with Willis Tower as the focal point.

It is an environment that Chicagoan sports fans should experience!

St. Ignatius College Prep is a private Jesuit school located in the Near West Side neighborhood of Chicago. It was founded in 1869 as the city’s flagship Jesuit high school and one of the preeminent Catholic college prep schools in the country. The school occupies a 26-acre campus adjacent to the University of Illinois at Chicago and enrolls approximately 1,500 students.

St. Ignatius’ baseball team is elite. The Wolfpack win a lot. They began this current season at 2-0 with a pair of blowout wins wins last week.

However, wins and losses are not what I am here to discuss. My focus is on the facilities.

The program broke ground on a new baseball field in June of 2022.

The Wolfpack played its first game on its new field approximately nine months later!

Unfortunately, for logistical purposes, St. Ignatius went with turf. Nobody likes to play baseball on turf but it makes a lot of sense for teams that play during the rainy months. Weather is less of an issue.

Fortunately, the focus of the field is not the field itself. It’s the backdrop.

There are very few views in sports that are better, if we’re being real. Not just baseball.

And photos don’t even do it justice. Especially when the net is in the frame. If the sun is shining, the Wolfpack play on a high school baseball stadium that is straight out of a movie. Incredible scenes.

Saint Ignatius College Prep will play its regular season through the end of May. If you live in Chicago or happen to be in town for a home game and have some time to kill, swing by the Near West Side to grab a hot dog, enjoy the spring weather and watch one of the best high school baseball programs in the midwest swing a bat!
