Matthew Stafford was traded from Detroit to Los Angeles during the offseason and is already in a position to make history. At 34 years old, the Rams quarterback could become the first Los Angeles Rams quarterback to throw a touchdown in the Super Bowl.

That may be hard to believe, considering that the Rams have such a storied history, but there are quite a few unique factors that make it true.

For starters, the Los Angeles Rams have only been the Los Angeles Rams for 55 of the 86 years that the organization has existed. During that time, the L.A. Rams accrued two of the franchise’s four previous Super Bowl appearances.

  • Cleveland Rams — (1936-1942, 1944-1945) ~ Suspended operations — (1943)
  • Los Angeles Rams — (1946-1994)
    • Super Bowl XIV (1979/1980)
  • Saint Louis Rams — (1995-2015)
    • Super Bowl XXXIV (1999/2000)
    • Super Bowl XXXVI (2001/2002)
  • Los Angeles Rams — (2016-Present)
    • Super Bowl LIII (2018/19)
    • Super Bowl LVI (2021/22)

During Super Bowl XIV and Super Bowl LII, the Rams were not successful. Los Angeles lost by a combined score of 44-22.

In 1980, the Rams lost to the Steelers 31-19. Quarterback Vince Ferragamo went 15-of-25 for 212 yards with an interception in the game, but did not throw a touchdown. The only Los Angeles passing touchdown of the game came on a trick play from wide receiver Lawrence McCutcheon.

In 2019, the Rams lost to the Patriots 13-3. Quarterback Jared Goff went 19-of-38 for 229 yards with an interception in the game, but did not throw a touchdown. Los Angeles did not score in the game, neither through the air or on the ground.

Thus, Stafford can make history on Sunday.

Should the first-year Los Angeles Rams quarterback throw one single touchdown pass against the Bengals, he will be the first Los Angeles Rams quarterback to ever throw a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl. It seems likely that Stafford is going to etch his name into the history books after leading his team to the biggest stage in year one. Impressive.
