With the 2024 running of the GEICO 500 in the books, Talladega Superspeedway has returned to a state of emptiness. However, remnants of the party that was are left behind.

The campgrounds that once held more than 140,000 people over the weekend lay vacant, except for some reminders of the shenanigans that took place just a few short days ago.

One of the funniest traditions in sports takes place on the Monday afternoon after the NASCAR race. Talladega’s social media admin take a few hours to walk the grounds and take inventory on what did or did not survive the raucous. It creates a thread of mystery that raises so many unanswered questions.

Talladega has so many stories to tell.

This year’s thread included plenty of lawn chairs, beads from the BLVD, leather furniture, mattresses and cots next to the port-a-potties, bread, grills, a few tents, and countless half-assembled tailgating structures. Two specific items stand out in particular. One will not go over well with the people of Gainesville.

While wandering through the grounds, Talladega’s social media team discovered a cornhole board that did not make it back home. A big Florida Gators logo was painted on top with the name spelled out.

The Superspeedway’s official account on X took the opportunity to fire a shot across the bow at Alabama and Auburn’s SEC foes. Pow pow!

Every day in which the Gators catch a stray is a good day. 13 of 14 members of the SEC would agree!

And then there is the mystery of the missing couch. It remains unsolved.

In response to the annual thread, multiple people who attended the race replied back (check the replies) to quip about a couch. Talladega does not know of the couch. A couch was not discovered on the walk.

This could mean one of two things.

  1. There is a couch that was hidden somewhere on the grounds by a group of hooligans who hope that it will make it to next year without being found.
  2. No such couch exists and a group of people are pulling a prank.

For sake of hilarity, I am choosing to believe the first. The couch in question has been identified:

I would like to imagine that the couch was hoisted high into a tree or buried into a pit. It may have been burned to a crisp.

We don’t know. Only the people who were there are in on this joke know the location of the missing couch. Stay tuned!
