The Tampa Bay Rays finished 2nd in the AL East (99-63) and made the MLB Playoffs for the 5th time in the past 10 seasons, and they’ll now reward some diehard fans with free (real) tattoos.

It isn’t unprecedented for professional sports organizations to get involved in the tattoo business. The Islanders used to have an in-house tattoo parlor at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. And now the Tampa Bay Rays are offering free tattoos to a limited number of fans in St. Pete.

The MLB Playoffs begins today at Poison Ivy Ink in St Petersburg and at the Poison Ivy Ink location in Temple Terrace, both in the Tampa Bay area. Each location is offering free tattoos to the first 50 customers who show up today, October 2nd, between 2 pm and 8 pm.

Diehard Tampa Bay Rays fans will get to choose between five team designs. Those designs include (1) the team’s iconic sunburst found on their jerseys and hats, (2) an actual devil ray swimming, (3) the ‘TB’ logo with a stingray swimming, (4) Raymond the Rays’ mascot, and (5) the TB letters logo.

Here’s a look at 4 of the 5 designs:

These free tattoos will be 2-3 inches in size and are available only on arms and legs. The Tampa Bay Rays tattoos are limited to 1 per customer. And the team is asking that everyone stays well hydrated and full before they arrive to get inked up.

Is it realistic that diehard Rays fans will be lining up at these tattoo shops today to get their free ink? 100%. Absolutely. Not doubt in my mind.

I’ve been a diehard Rays fan for years and this is quite possibly the perfect Playoffs promo for a large segment of the Tampa Bay Rays fanbase.

Tampa now faces the Texas Rangers beginning on Tuesday. They’ll be without Brandon Lowe who is now out 6-8 weeks with a fracture kneecap. The Rays had 11 players injured for a combined 787 days this season alone. Now, as is tradition, MLB has given Tampa Bay the 3 pm slots on TV….
