The USA Has Once Again Proved To Be The Best Sporting Country In The World As It Tops The Medal Table

Maddie Meyer

While the International Olympic Committee doesn’t officially publish medal table standings, everyone around the world follows them with baited breath to see who tops the table. Most countries have the table sorted by gold medals first, though the USA media outlets have typically sorted by total medals.

But, it doesn’t matter what you sort by following the conclusion of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France. Team USA has come out on top once again.

Heading into the final day of competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics, Team USA was one gold medal behind China in the gold medal count, with each team having a few opportunities left on the board. After China won a gold in Women’s Weightlifting, the USA needed two golds with just two chances left in Track Cycling and Women’s Basketball.

The Americans stepped up to the plate in incredible fashion. Jennifer Valente won gold in the Women’s Omnium, putting the USA just one gold medal behind with Team USA Women’s Basketball awaiting the gold medal game against France

The USA Women’s Basketball team did not play well by their lofty standards. But, they held off France, winning 67-66 in a dramatic game from start to finish.

That tied the gold medal count with China at 40 each, and the USA has far more silver and bronze medals than the Chinese, putting them in the top spot.

Considering that Team USA left a ton of gold medals they probably should’ve had on the table, this is a great result for Team USA, and should be seen as the floor for their performance in four years at Los Angeles 2028.

Like usual, track and swimming carried much of the load for Team USA. While USA Swimming had what could fairly be considered a down Olympics, they still won 8 gold medals and 28 total medals, more than any other countries. USA Track and Field was absolutely electric,  winning 34 medals including 14 gold in a dominant performance from start to finish.

While those two were the majority of the gold medals, thirteen different sports won gold medals for Team USA, showing just how well-rounded the entire Olympic apparatus is in America.

There were disappointments for Team USA,  just like each and every Summer Olympics. But, they still came out on top, the fourth straight Summer Olympics the USA has won the most gold medals. Overall, it was the most medals since the Soviet-boycotted 1984 Summer Olympics, also in Los Angeles, for Team USA.
