Tennessee State placed its athletic director on administrative leave. This decision comes just two months after six different head coaches at the Nashville-based university gave Dr. Mikki Allen a vote of no confidence.

Considering the success of the college football and college basketball programs in recent years, the sudden uprising against Allen came as a bit of a surprise. However, the university seems to think there is enough reason to create distance.

Tennessee State University hired Dr. Mikki Allen as its Director of Athletics in May of 2020. He arrived to Music City with 11 years of fundraising, student-athlete development, business operations, and administrative experience at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
The first few years of his tenure were widely regarded as an overall success. Allen made significant hires in football and men’s and women’s basketball, among others. Heisman Trophy winner and Titans legend Eddie George spent four years as the head football coach. WNBA legend Candice Dupree serves as the women’s basketball coach. NBA veteran and Mike Krzyzewski disciple Nolan Smith led the men’s basketball program to March Madness in his first year.
However, something of a mutiny took place at the end of May.
Six program coaches submitted a vote of no confidence letter to Tennessee State President Dwayne Tucker. The letter expressed complaints about the leadership and its lack of communication. It was signed by Smith, Dupree, new head football coach Reggie Barlow, track coach Chandra Cheeseborough, volleyball coach Donika Sutton and softball coach Genee McRath.
“This Vote of No Confidence is not rooted in personal grievance, but rather in a collective belief that the department can and should operate at a higher standard consistent with the values, mission, and potential of Tennessee State University.”
The coaches cited “inconsistent communication and lack of operational transparency,” a “lack of clear departmental vision, structure and accountability,” and a “declining morale and trust within the athletic department.” No further details were made public.
Regardless of how things play out in the coming months, this moment will define the modern era of Tennessee State athletics. President Tucker has the opportunity to ensure his athletic director shares his commitment to excellence and has the support of the coaches and student-athletes. Only then can can the AD begin to overcome the university’s preexisting financial hurdles. We’ll see.

The university opened an internal investigation after the vote of no confidence. What exactly caused the coaches to lose trust in Dr. Mikki Allen?
Although we do not yet know that full answer, President Tucker took a huge step toward the future on Thursday. He placed the athletic director on administrative leave, effective immediately. His decision stemmed from the letter in May.
“I took these concerns very seriously and immediately launched an internal investigation,” Tucker said in the statement. “Effective today, TSU athletic director Dr. Mikki Allen has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.”
The timeline for Allen’s potential return depends on the investigation. He might not return at all! Tucker could not provide additional details. We still do not know the basis for the initial complaint and corresponding letter.
“Because this is an active personnel matter, we cannot comment further at this time,” Tucker said. “However, we remain committed to addressing this matter with the appropriate seriousness and care for all parties involved.”
Tennessee State will name an interim athletic director in the coming days. Allen will remain on leave until the investigation is complete.
