First-year Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko picked up the first signature win of his career on Saturday when the Aggies blew out ninth-ranked Missouri at Kyle Field.

But it’s what Elko did after the game that has fans believing that they’ve found just the man to turn their program around.

Sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman, who’d struggled with injuries and inconsistency during his young career, went 18-of-22 for 276 yards and added 33 yards on the ground in one of his best showings as a college quarterback.

After the victory, Elko stepped to the podium and offered a passionate endorsement of his young signal caller.

Mike Elko Slams Critics Of Sophomore QB Conner Weigman After Big Game

“You can challenge Conner for how he plays, and you can be upset with Conner for how he throws the football,” Elko said. “Some of the stuff that has been said about this kid and written about this kid… is embarrassing. Absolutely embarrassing, the stuff that gets out there on this kid.”

Weigman previously faced criticism over his commitment to program and his teammatates. But Elko put those rumors to bed.

“This kid’s a winner. He’s a competitor,” the Aggies head coach said. “He does everything that he needs to do for Texas A&M football, and there’s a lot of people right now that need to stand up and recognize what they’ve said over the last three weeks and take some… ownership over it.”

Elko’s comments are a far cry from previous Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher. Fisher failed to win 10-plus games in any of his six seasons with the Aggies. And more than that he routinely hung players out to dry.

Elko is a welcome change from that mentality for Aggies fans, and it appears they’ve found a coach who can yet again give them something to believe in.
