There can be a lot of money on the line at fishing tournaments, and that can lead to participants resorting to some shameless cheating to try to get a chunk of it. Stashing weights inside a catch is one of the more popular ways to skirt the rules, and one man in Texas landed in jail after he was charged with doing exactly that after reeling in some bass.

The vast majority of people who fish are in it for the love of the game. That particular pastime is a fantastic excuse to soak in some nature and relax (especially if you have a few beers in the process) while potentially heading home with some meat you can use for a meal to cap off your day.

There are also plenty of anglers who take fishing seriously to the point where they enter tournaments that can boast some sizeable paydays. In a perfect world, participants wouldn’t have to worry about cheaters in their midst, but there are far too many people who can resist the urge to violate the sanctity of the sport in pursuit of a payday.

The world of pro fishing has been rocked by its fair share of scandals over the years, and it looks like we can add another one to the list thanks to what allegedly unfolded at a tournament in Texas.

Some of those aforementioned scandals have revolved around some pretty elaborate ploys, including a group of Romanians who spent five months conditioning carp to favor their bait before a tournament and one man in England who broke into an aquarium to steal a bass he entered as a legitimate catch.

That second type of fish was at the center of a tournament the Lake Fork Lure Company organized in conjunction with Big Bass Splash in Texas last weekend, which ended up being rocked by the same kind of scandal that impacted a walleye competition on Lake Erie that made headlines back in 2022.

That tournament on Lake Fork (located around 90 minutes east of Dallas) featured a grand total of $100,000 up for grabs, which included $10K for the person who bagged the heaviest fish and close to $90,000 that was doled out in the form of hourly payouts.

According to KLTV, an entrant named Curtis Lee Daniels was initially awarded $2,500 after winning two of those hourly prizes, but things took a turn when tournament organizers contacted the Texas Game Wardens when a red flag was raised after a metal detector was passed over one of the largemouth bass he’d entered.

They subsequently opened up the fish and discovered three 3/4-ounce weights inside its stomach, which matched others sinkers that were found on Daniels’ boat.

He not only forfeited his winnings but was charged with a third-degree felony that carries a potential sentence of between two and 10 years in prison along with a fine of up to $10,000. Daniels was taken to Wood County Jail before being released on a $20,000 bond on Monday ahead of his initial hearing.
