LIV Golf has been responsible for generating a virtually unprecedented amount of drama in the sport, and fans and haters alike have been keeping tabs on its future after it lost its primary source of funding. The organization has had trouble controlling the flow of information, and one member is convinced there’s a “rat” in the players’ group chat who’s responsible for leaking it.
In August, LIV Golf prematurely wrapped up its fifth season in Indianapolis after calling off the team championship that was slated to unfold in Michigan at the end of that month.
That development was linked to the unexpected closure of the money spigot that had previously been fed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which announced its decision to pull the plug on the operation it had poured billions of dollars into at the end of April.
The league has been on life support since then, and there’s been plenty of rumors linked to player departures supplementing news concerning its efforts to stay alive. Many of those revelations have come from journalists and insiders citing unnamed sources, and one man believes at least one of his fellow golfers is fueling the fire.
Thomas Detry thinks a “rat” in a group chat for LIV Golfers is leaking information
At this point, Bryson DeChambeau is probably the only person affiliated with LIV Golf who can be referred to as a “star,” as the vast majority of notable names who’ve linked up with the organization have seen their relevance and visibility take a major hit after joining.
However, it’s also been an attractive destination for guys who weren’t close to being household names before joining. That’s the case with Thomas Detry, the 33-year-old Belgian who made around $10.3 million on the PGA Tour (where he had a lone victory) and peaked at 22nd in the Official World Golf Rankings before taking the LIV Golf plunge at the start of 2026.
Detry is currently at the Wentworth Club in England ahead of this week’s BMW PGA Championship (a DP World Tour event), and during a conversation with Today’s Golfer, he gave a pretty ringing endorsement of LIV Golf while saying he’s “had one of the best years of my life” since joining.
He also praised CEO Scott O’Neil for providing players with frequent updates concerning the future of the league, but he voiced his displeasure with how often that intel has made its way to the press while asserting one of his fellow players could be responsible, saying:
“We’ve got a player group chat. It seems like there’s a rat in there.
It seems like we’re just trying to keep all the stuff between us and it seems like most of the stuff is being released out there all the time quite quickly. So it’s not easy to keep confidential things confidential.
But they’ve really improved with the communications.”
LIV Golf is seemingly on track to return in 2027, as it recently filed for bankruptcy as part of a restructuring strategy after finding new funding courtesy of BC Partners. It’s unclear how much will change when it reboots, but Detry would probably prefer some tweaks to how it currently handles its internal communications.
