Few things in life are better than a big man touchdown. More than often, it’s created by chaos and results in an exhilarating score in unusual fashion.

Friday night’s game between Thompson High School and Vestavia Hills was no exception.

Thompson is a powerhouse in Alabama this season. Entering Week 7, the Warriors had out-scored their opponents by a combined total of 310-12.

Now, after putting on a clinic against Vestavia, they are 7-0 by a score of 359-19. Sheesh.

One of the touchdowns scored on Friday truly showed just how everything continues to fall in their favor. Literally.

During the second quarter, already holding a 21-7 lead, Thompson was on defense. Vestavia quarterback Mitchell Towns threw the ball over the middle and had it hit the umpire.

The ball bounced high into the air off of the referee’s knee and right into the hands of 6-foot-4, 240-pound defensive end Peter Woods. Woods held onto the interception and the big fella turned on the jets, going 38 yards for a touchdown.

Thompson didn’t need the lucky bounce and won the game by 42, but it made for a glorious big man touchdown so we are the better for it. Even in the booth, Thompson’s broadcast team couldn’t hold it together.

The color commentator was straight up belly laughing. He didn’t believe what had just transpired and could not hold it together.

From start to finish, that is one of my favorite plays of 2021 so far.
