Tiger Woods announced this morning that while he intended to tee it up at the Genesis Invitational in San Diego this week he won’t be able to and how this was about mental health and not the physical ailments which have plagued him in recent years. Woods is still mourning the loss of his mother, Kultida Woods, who passed away on February 4th and is still processing the life-altering event.

Tiger shared the message with his fans on X and his other social media platforms. He wrote “I planned to tee it up this week, but I’m just not ready. I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss.” Woods went on to add “Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my mom’s passing.”

Genesis is one of Tiger Woods’ major sponsors and if he could play this week, he would. They have stuck with him throughout his recovery process after his accident years ago and while that relationship absolutely pales in comparison to Tiger’s relationship with his mom, it just illustrates how much he is going through at this time because the Genesis Invitational is a tournament he certainly would not skip.

After Tiger Woods shared the Genesis Invitational update, everyone in teh golf world rallied around him… Those who shared messages of support for Eldrick include TWLegion, Dan Rapaport at Skratch, Riggs at Barstool, the PGA Tour, Golf Digest, and many more.

Tiger Woods is bigger than the game of golf. Any week he’s in the field it’s special. But Tiger’s mother passed away less than a full week ago. While I don’t know his circumstances I do know what it feels like to lose your mother and my heart goes out to Woods at this time.
