The Los Angeles Chargers appeared to be in position to pull a major upset and win their first game of the 2026 season Sunday in Buffalo. Justin Herbert blew that opportunity with a poor second half performance.

The Chargers watched a double-digit lead evaporate after the first quarter. Tom Brady roasted their signal caller amid the collapse.

Justin Herbert has struggled across the first three games of the season. He completed 59% of his attempts in a pair of losses to the Raiders and Cardinals. He entered Game 3 with more interceptions than touchdown passes.

He struggled with consistency again against the Bills.

Los Angeles took a 10-0 first quarter lead after a Herbert touchdown pass and Cameron Dicker field goal. They would be held to six points the rest of the way.

Buffalo quickly overcame the early deficit to tie the score before halftime. Still, the Chargers had an opportunity to regain control late.

Los Angeles took a 13-10 lead in the third quarter. They had a chance to add to it with the offense near the redzone in the fourth.

Rather than go up 20-10, though, they turned the ball over.

Herbert threw a pick to CJ Gardner-Johnson on the goal line. Tom Brady absolutely fried Justin Herbert after the fact.

“He throws it down the middle of the field, but there’s a safety down the middle of the field. Poor awareness. Poor decision. Throws him a meatball sub,” he said in the FOX booth.

Buffalo took advantage, scoring a touchdown on the ensuing possession. They went onto win the game by a score. The interception had a direct impact on the outcome. It was a 10-to-14-point swing.

Herbert has struggled.

Upon entering this matchup, he’d completed less than 60% of his passes with two touchdowns and three interceptions. He’d also been sacked six times.

On Sunday, the struggles continued. He was unable to deliver in the big moment. Los Angeles lost, 24-16.

The reasons for the quarterback’s falloff are unclear. Some suggest the Chargers have failed to put talent around him at the skill positions. The wideout room leaves a lot to be desired.

Others, however, believe the issues are linked to off-the-field distractions. Former NFL pro TJ Ward blamed Herbert’s fiancee, Madison Beer, for his downfall.

Whatever the case, the team needs answers. Los Angeles is now 0-3 with a matchup vs. the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks looming.
