Travis Hunter Jr. is the best player in college football and should be the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy. As such, Colorado’s two-way superstar is one of the top-valued players in terms of NIL.

However, the 21-year-old cornerback and wide receiver left a lot of money on the table to play for Deion Sanders in Boulder.

Hunter was the top-ranked prospect in the recruiting Class of 2022. He could’ve played anywhere in the country. Florida State was slated to receive his commitment right up until the last possible second, when the Georgia-native made the shocking decision to flip to Jackson State. Never before had a five-star recruit commit to an HBCU program. Never before had an FCS school landed the No. 1 player.

Sanders (and his open-minded approach to Hunter’s position) was the primary catalyst for the flip.

Not only did Coach Prime offer Hunter a chance to play on both sides of the ball when other schools didn’t, he gets to be coached by a Pro Football Hall of Famer and one of the best defensive backs of all-time. It was a decision that put the NFL first.

Hunter recently spoke about his decision to play for Jackson State, and then later transfer to Colorado.

Finances were not a factor in either move. Other schools offered a lot more money.

There was a rumor that Barstool Sports paid $1,000,000 for Hunter to play at Jackson State. That was not true. In fact, it sounds like he didn’t get any money from the Tigers.

The opportunity to learn from Deion Sanders was an opportunity that Travis Hunter could not pass up.

Now, with all of this being said, it’s not like the best athlete of this generation is broke. He has been able to make a comfortable living through legitimate Name, Image and Likeness opportunities — like his podcast.

Still, Hunter could’ve received a massive sum of money to play elsewhere. Getting to the NFL was more important.
