Texas Tech quarterback Tyler Shough’s difficult college football journey took another turn on Saturday night. The 23-year-old suffered a nasty leg injury in the fourth game of his sixth season and will miss the remainder of the year.

Shough, a former four-star prospect in the recruiting Class of 2018, committed to Oregon out of high school and redshirted as a freshman. He backed up Justin Herbert in 2019 and played the majority of the pandemic-shortened year in 2020.

Shough then entered the transfer portal after his redshirt sophomore season. The Red Raiders welcomed him to Lubbock as the starter, but a broken collarbone during Week 4 kept him from finishing his first full year as QB1.

2022, Shough’s fifth year, was not dissimilar. His position in the starting quarterback competition was lost after a left shoulder injury and the 6-foot-5, 230-pound pro-style passer played in just three games. One of those three starts was a win Ole Miss in the Texas Bowl at the end of the year and it solidified his role as the starter for 2023.

Unfortunately, after accounting for nine touchdowns in the first three games of his sixth season, Shough broke his fibula on Saturday evening. Although the injury is truly unfortunate, it will likely allow him the ability to play again as a seventh-year in 2024.

Fortunately, he was in good spirits as he exited the field on an injury cart.

The injury also proved that Tyler Shough is a DAWG.

Shough snapped his leg after getting rolled up on at the end of a run against West Virginia. It was a very gruesome injury that you can watch here if you so choose.

Although Shough’s leg was visibly splintered, it did not stop him from hustling up to the line and running another play. He, with a broken fibula, took the snap and threw a pass!
