Congratulations to the University of Massachusetts Minutemen. They are officially not the worst team in college football this year.

Although Saturday’s slate was full of high-ranked matchups and great back-and-forth games, none was more important than UMass vs. UConn. Neither team had won a game this season and both schools carried significant losing streaks.

For the Huskies, their last win came against the Minutemen in 2019 after not playing last season. Outside of that single win, UConn had not won a game since Sept. 15, 2018.

For the Minutemen, their last win game came against Akron in Sept. 28, 2019 after playing just four games last season. They carried a 16-game losing streak into Saturday.

To say that it was a battle of the worst two teams in the FBS is an understatement, because both schools have lost to FCS programs in recent history. Thus, the meeting between the two northeastern programs meant a lot to both sides.

In a gritty, not particularly competitive game, UMass defeated UConn 27-13 to avoid the label of college football’s worst team. As the clock hit zero, the student section (of which there was maybe 1,000 people?) stormed onto the field.

What a rush. An 0-5 team storming the field after beating an 0-6 team is everything that makes college football great.

Congratulations, again, to the Minutemen. 1-16 in their last 17 games!
