There is likely a very easy explanation for this unexpected leak, if that’s what we are calling it.
Programs often reach out to other college football coaches for help with scouting. They will trade their own film, or the film of their opponents, in exchange for something that will give them an advantage.
Utah defensive lineman Jamal Wallace debuted a new way to watch film.
At 6-foot-3, 313 pounds, Jamal Wallace joins the Utes as a senior. The former unranked recruit began his career at Sierra College. He later transferred to Tennessee and spent the last two seasons with the Volunteers in a limited role. He played in nine total games with seven total tackles.
Wallace entered the transfer portal at the end of 2025. Utah brought him on as a crucial depth piece who will look for meaningful reps during what is likely his final year of eligibility.
As the 2026 season nears closer, Wallace recently went viral on social media for how he watches film. The Utes may not have the same technology as other top programs so he decided to get creative.
The video wall allows Wallace to look at the offensive sets in real time and to adjust accordingly against a mock offensive line (chairs). Once the ball is snapped, he can work on his pass rush. Every little advantage helps. This adds an additional physical element to a film session that would otherwise be stationary.
How did the Utes get film of Grand Valley State?
One of the video clips in Jamal Wallace’s video features the Grand Valley State offense. The Lakers are one of the most dominant programs in Division-II. They made the quarterfinals in two of the last three seasons. Head coach Scott Wooster wants to know how the Utes got his film.
“How’d they get our tape??? 🤔,” he asked when the video first went viral on social media.
“Still want to know how they got our tape??? 🤔,” he lated responded to a second post of the same video.
The explanation is likely pretty simple. Utah plays Idaho at home in Week 1. The new offensive coordinator at Idaho, Ian Shoemaker, spent the last two years at Grand Valley State University. It makes sense that the Utes would want to scout the Lakers’ offense from 2024 and 2025.
They likely reached out to schools like Michigan Tech, Wayne State, Roosevelt, Ferris State, etc. for film of Grand Valley to prepare for Idaho. Those smaller programs get Division-I tape as a resource in return.
