Stephen A. Smith is defending Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs over their National Anthem controversy.
During the rendition of the ‘Star Spangled Banner” in game 1 of the NBA Finals, several Spurs players, including Wembanyama, didn’t have their hands over their hearts, which angered many conservative fans on social media.
“Spurs players REFUSE to put their hands over their hearts for the national anthem!” said conservative influencer Matt Wallace. “They are making millions of dollars to play a child’s game and still feel oppressed somehow… Only 2 players covered their hearts. Take note of which ones!”
Outkick’s Bobby Burack also noted that Wembanyama had his arms crossed during the anthem.

I heard @dpshow talking today about French citizen Victor Wembanyama becoming the “face of the NBA.” The dude can’t even respect the American National Anthem being sung. Heck, most of the Spurs (except for two players) obviously hate America, too. I considered watching the Finals… pic.twitter.com/BUmrMn5DjG

“This is patently false. There are plenty of people who listen to the Nat’l Anthem and simply bow their heads with their hands in front of them or behind their backs and pay respects. Holding your hand over your heart is not a requirement. The Spurs were not being disrespectful in anyway. Who is anyone to say they were just over that gesture? That is utterly ridiculous!!!”
