Clemson kicker Jonathan Weitz received a surprise phone call from his former head coach this week.

Weitz, a graduate student, served as backup for the Tigers in 2022.

He left the team last year, but is still enrolled at the school and is taking online classes in Charleston, South Carolina.

Fast forward just a bit and Weitz is suddenly Clemson’s starting kicker after the Tigers missed three of their four field goal attempts, as well as an extra point in the first three weeks of the season.

Weitz made his opportunity count, as well.

The Charleston native finally got his chance to kick a field goal on Saturday. And it came in perhaps Clemson’s biggest game of the year, a home showdown with No. 4 Florida State.

You might expect the graduate student to have some nerves in that situation, right?

Wrong.

Weitz stepped up and drilled a 30-yard field goal right down the middle on his first attempt.

What an incredible story.
