The New York Yankees took Game 1 of the Subway Series against the Mets at Citi Field.

Yankees’ left fielder Oswaldo Cabrera only made one appearance at the plate and struck out but his peculiar necklace was enough to cause a stir and make headlines.

On the YES Network broadcast, Meredith Marakovits explained that Oswaldo Cabrera is wearing a necklace with his grandmother’s tooth. And he was wearing his grandmother Anna’s tooth as a necklace because Oswaldo Cabrera’s mother asked him to wear it and he listens to anything and everything his mother asks him to do.

On the broadcast, Marakovits says “File this one under you probably won’t see this every day. (He) walked by me in the clubhouse today and I said, ‘What’s on your necklace? Is that a tooth?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, it’s a tooth. My mom told me to wear it.’ It’s his grandma Anna’s tooth.”

I’m not one to judge. Oswaldo Cabrera is only hitting .195 at the plate so far this season after 164 at bats. He has 32 total hits, 19 runs, and 4 home runs.

If his grandmother Anna’s tooth mounted on a necklace is what gets Oswaldo Cabrera out of his funk then I think all of Yankees nation would encourage him to wear it every day.

He has already been sent down to Scranton (Yankees’ minor league) once this season after being named the starting left fielder on Opening Day. But he was recalled from Scranton on June 3rd after Greg Allen was injured.

The window to make an impression should be open for a few weeks. Greg Allen is out with a right hip-flexor strain that could see him sidelined for up to 8 weeks.

New York is currently 8 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East. The Rays hold the best record in baseball and the Yankees face a tough race to catch them.
