That Awkward Moment When Anthony Mackie Didn’t Know He Was An Avenger Till He Saw ‘Age Of Ultron’

Anthony Mackie’s been very busy as Falcon, flying at a feverish pace from his character’s original introduction in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ to his more recent bit in ‘Ant-Man.’ Now for the real kicker; we all know the top level execs at Marvel pride themselves on a relentless commitment to super secrecy, but they honestly took it a bit too far with this move. It turns out Mackie had no idea his character was a part of the Avengers till he was literally posted up in a theater watching ‘Age of Ultron’ for himself.

I’m just enjoying imagining Mackie, maybe with a hungry hand half-submerged in a buttered-down bowl of popcorn, only to be straight shocked, jaw agape as the exciting truth is revealed, and he learns his character ‘Falcon’ is slated to join the team of Avengers.

The folks over at IGN had a chance to ask Mackie how the moment of revelation went down. Mackie said,

“I had no idea. I flew in, Chris and Scarlett are up top and the rest of us are standing there. It was like “Cut. Anthony fly in. Action. Hm-hm-hm. Cut. Alright, thanks!” That was pretty much it. Six months later you go to a premiere and you s**t yourself.

Everybody was like “Why are you so excited?” I’m like, “Arrhhhahhh… I just found out I’m an Avenger!” That’s pretty much how it happened over and over. That’s how Cap 2 happened, over and over and over again. So, I’m used to it. I’m interested to see what’s going to happen with this movie.

Gotta’ love it man. I’ve been in Mackie’s corner since I saw him play Nate Ruffin in the emotionally-heavy, though uplifting football flick ‘We Are Marshall.’ The guy can act his ass off, and his more recent role as ‘Falcon’ is brilliantly showing off the actor’s humor-savvy side. Mackie will no doubt introduce a new element to the team dynamic, already chock-full of super sized egos. It’ll be interesting to see how Falcon and Ant-Man get along after their recent altercation. There are some wrinkles between those two to be smoothed out for sure.
