19-year-old Clarity Engel, a University of Colorado, Boulder student currently studying international affairs and Spanish, has come forward to call out the trolls who have been spamming her Instagram account about how she’s a “whore” for posting bikini photos. Hoping to one day become a humanitarian lawyer, angry commenters have told her “If you’re really serious about having a career, you won’t post pictures like that” along with “Didn’t you want to be a politician? Not with that photo!”
Rather than take the comments laying down, Clarity told The Tab that “I’ve always been very proud of my femininity, I feel confident enough to embrace and express myself through my physical appearance, and I do this at times with photos…I pride myself on being intelligent, open-minded and well versed in many academic fields, as well as being a constant contributor to my community and non-profit organizations, so these comments confused and hurt me”:
“As I began to further look into this controversial topic, I found that men mostly, were the ones making the degrading comments to women, even though they faced no backlash when posting pictures of themselves in Speedos or, in many male celebrities cases, nude for magazines.”
“I felt a duty to my fellow women to speak out against this issue and common double-standard.”(via)
For the most part, however, Clarity says she tends to ignore most of the comments and people who try to put her down. “I thank everyone, literally everyone, who supports my work and reaches out to me with kind words” she explains, “It’s important to let them know that their connection to my photos or writing does truly affect me, in the best way possible, and I want them to know that I do appreciate their support and thanks.”
