Beloved Testudo Statue at University of Maryland Set On Fire by Accident

But one such offering went awry last night and ended up with the beloved turtle engulfed in flames. Or so Twitter claimed and photos seemed to suggest.

The authorities, on the other hand, have a different take on the situation.

University of Maryland Police say that the turtle itself was never on fire.

Instead, it's likely that items placed on the turtle's base likely caught fire, and according to authorities, a candle likely tipped over.

Case closed, I guess.

There was no damage to the actual sculpture and, as far as we're aware, final exams took place as scheduled today.

The lesson: you're going to need a much, much bigger fire to cancel the exam you didn't study for.
