Around this time last year, The White Lotus and Sex Education star Aimee Lou Wood was making the late night TV rounds after the huge success of season 3 and during an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show she talked in depth about the unique reaction Americans had to her prominent teeth and how it was an endearing reaction. Shortly after that, Saturday Night Live jumped the shark and did a sketch blowing her teeth out of proportion.
After the SNL sketch she called it out as “mean and unfunny” because she was the only one being punched down on while the good ones punch up, not down. She said “last thing I’ll say on the matter. I am not thin skinned. I actually love being taken the piss out of when it’s clever and in good spirits. But the joke was about fluoride. I have big gap teeth, not bad teeth. I don’t mind caricature — I understand that’s what SNL is. But the rest of the skit was punching up and I/Chelsea was the only one punched down on. Okay end of.”
Aimee Lou Wood Comes Full Circle With SNL And Her Teeth
This week, Aimee Lou Wood is the host of the new Saturday Night Live UK which is in its first season. This will be the 6th of 8 episodes on Season 1 of the Lorne Michaels produced UK spinoff that airs on Sky One which is owned by the same parent company as NBC Universal (Comcast).
Aimee will host with musical guest MEEK and prior to this week’s episode she cut a promo where she makes light of the teeth controversy with Saturday Night Live from last year:
Good on her for having a sense of humor about it all. I haven’t had the chance yet to watch an episode of the new UK SNL but have heard good things from colleagues.
Tina Fey hosted the series opener. They’ve had the Foo Fighters on already as a musical guest. Things appear to be taking off over there.
