  • Ana de Armas is set to star as the legendary Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik’s Blonde.
  • Originally scheduled to release in 2021, the film was rumored to have been delayed due to its sexual content.
  • Dominik has recently confirmed that his Monroe biopic is, in fact, rated NC-17.

Over the last eight months or so, we’ve been tracking the release of Blonde, the Marilyn Monroe biopic directed by Andrew Dominik and starring Ana de Armas as the legendary American actress and model.

Originally scheduled to be released on Netflix in late 2021, Blonde was ultimately bumped from the streamer’s release schedule and not given a new release date. At the time, rumors and reports indicated that Netflix had taken issue with the film’s graphic content, which reportedly earned the movie an NC-17 rating.

During a recent interview with ScreenDaily, Dominik confirmed that his cut of Blonde is, in fact, an NC-17 rated film and that it’s “what you want” when it comes to a Marilyn Monroe project.

“It’s a demanding movie,” Dominik said of Blonde. “If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the f—ing audience’s problem. It’s not running for public office. It’s an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, it’s kind of what you want, right? I want to go and see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story.”

And frankly, Dominik is right, as an NC-17 Marilyn Monroe film starring Ana de Armas is a selling point in and of itself. People — people like you and I — will likely check out the project solely for that reason.

While Blonde does not have an official release date at this time, Dominik — who’s also directed The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Killing Them Softly — is hoping the movie will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival before later hitting Netflix.
