You had to be Somewhat Online to be familiar with Andrew Tate heading into the final month of 2022. The kickboxer-turned-aspiring reality star-turned-men’s rights activist spent years cultivating a personal brand steeped in controversy and misogyny, and while he successfully gamed The Almighty Algorithm to amass a fairly large following, he was still a relatively obscure figure in the grand scheme of things.

However, that all changed just a few days before the world welcomed the arrival of the new year.

On December 27th, Tate found himself engaged in a war of words with climate change activist Greta Thunberg after attempting to troll her with a picture of him fueling up his Bugatti Chiron (one of 33 cars he claims he owns). Things then took an incredibly wild turn when the influencer and his brother Tristan were arrested in Romania in connection to human trafficking allegations, and he remains detained in the country as he faces charges that could result in him serving a multiyear prison sentence if convicted.

After the news broke, a viral rumor suggested Tate had inadvertently incriminated himself and given authorities a lead on his location by posting a video featuring pizza boxes that made it clear he was somewhere in Romania. Law enforcement officials subsequently denied that hint played a role in his capture, although he has been treated to a massive dose of cruel irony based on what’s transpired since he was jailed.

According to Insider, Romanian authorities have impounded 11 luxury cars owned by Tate and his brother in connection with the investigation, with a spokesperson saying the seizure is essentially being used as collateral to “sustain the cost of the investigation.” Gandul was able to capture a picture of some of the vehicles in question, which include a Rolls-Royce Wraith, Aston Martin Vanquish, a Porshe 911 Carrera 4S, and others reportedly worth a combined total of around $5 million.

Talk about adding insult to injury.
