One of the stranger pieces of discourse that has sprung out of Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon is the performance of recent Best Actor Brendan Fraser, who features in the third act of the film as seedy lawyer W.S. Hamilton.

Despite the fact that most reasonable movie fans on Twitter have pointed out that Fraser was likely delivering the exact performance that Scorsese wanted from him — which is that of a snobby, brass, loud Mid-Atlantic-accent-having litigator — there were still plenty of viral tweets that were critical of the 54-year-old actor.

Even Apple Films, who produced the $200 million Western epic, chimed in to defend Fraser by pointing to a line from David Grann’s Killers of the Flower Moon novel that features a boisterous W. S. Hamilton yelling in the courtroom similar to how he did in the movie.

During its first weekend at the domestic box office, Killers of the Flower Moon racked up $23 million, which is the third biggest opening of Scorsese’s legendary career following 2010’s Shutter Island ($41 million) and 2006’s The Departed ($26 million).

Not only has Killers of the Flower Moon been well received by fans, but it’s also been so adored by critics and industry professionals that the film is expected to be nominated in a litany of categories at next year’s Academy Awards, such as Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), Best Actress (Lily Gladstone), and Best Supporting Actor (Robert De Niro).

In addition to Fraser, who is coming off of an Oscar win for Best Actor for his work on The Whale, Killers of the Flower Moon also stars DiCaprio, Gladstone, De Niro, Jesse Plemons, John Lithgow, and more.

Killers of the Flower Moon, which the 80-year-old Scorsese has confirmed will be one of his final few films, is now playing in movie theaters across the United States.
