How Do You Find Penny Items At Home Depot?

One Arkansas couple demonstrated how they find penny items at their local Home Depot by testing it out with tiles.

Most people like a good discount. But how about items that cost only one penny?

If you’ve been on #PennyTok, you will see such a thing does exist. Lucky shoppers document how they strike gold finding these penny items, primarily at discount stores like Dollar Tree and Dollar General. One Arkansas couple is now sharing how to score penny items at Home Depot.

The video posted by husband and wife Jacob and Ava (@burkhead_farm) features the couple sitting in their truck. “We’ve had a bunch of people ask us how we do our penny items at Home Depot,” Ava says. “So, we’re gonna bring you along today and kind of show you what to do.”

Before embarking on the trip, she adds, “If you find a penny item on the shelf, by Home Depot policy, they have to sell it to you.”

Then, the video cuts to the couple standing inside a Home Depot.

“All right, so we follow a Facebook page. And it’s called ‘Home Depot Penny Items,’” Jacob says. “And a lot of people are finding tile on sale for a penny.”

From there, they use one of the tiles at the bottom of a shelf as an example.

“So, we scanned one of the tiles down here, and on the app [it] says ‘out of stock,” he says, pointing to the ‘Out of Stock’ screen on Ava’s phone. “This … usually means it’s a penny. We’re gonna take it to self-checkout and see if it’s a penny or not.”

The couple shows their self-checkout screen; they paid 88 cents after taxes for a batch of tile. “We just went back in and got more tile,” Ava says, walking outside, pushing a cart with four containers of tile.

“We ended up spending 44 cents this time; we only spent $1.32,” she concludes.

Did It Work For Viewers?

The couple’s demo amassed 1.2 million views. Many viewers who’ve tried cashing penny items in the past shared that they had varied results.

“When we found penny items, they refused to let us buy them,” one viewer commented.

“They absolutely won’t sell you something if they catch it at the wrong price, no matter what its makes. It’s happened to us twice,” another recalled.

“I accidentally found a penny stair bannister (it was an older item) and I had to fight the manager to sell it for the penny. I won !! and also that HD hates me now,” a third shared.

“My mom worked at HD. I loved tinkerbell when I was younger. She got me a cute tinkerbell mirror for a penny. They have been doing it for at least 2 decades,” a fourth stated.

Does Home Depot Have To Honor Penny Items?

Essentially, no, for several reasons. These penny items aren’t necessarily a store-promoted deal but rather discontinued merchandise intended to be removed from the shelves. According to SlashGear, the heavily marked-down prices are used as a way to track inventory while simultaneously notifying employees which ones to take down. Due to human error, workers either forget, miss them, or haven’t gotten to them yet, making it slim pickings for customers.

Since the couple and viewers had different experiences, it’s likely each store has their own policies regarding penny items. Therefore, it’s up to the employees whether or not they decide to honor them.
