A woman wheeled her shopping cart through the Home Depot checkout and scanned her items. Just before she swiped her card, a worker offered her a way to save a ton of money on her purchase. Then she realized that there’s a catch.
In a video with over 22,000 views, TikToker The Real Saucy (@therealsaucy27) recounts the awkward self-checkout experience.
“There’s a guy helping, and he says, ‘I save you $100,'” she says, imitating the worker. She thinks he’s offering her a coupon.
Then, the worker reaches across to hit the accept button on the store credit card offer screen. The caption reads, “I thought he had some secret coupon but he just wanted me to apply for a credit card.”
Would The Home Depot Card Actually Save Her $100?
Home Depot offers four different credit cards for customers: the consumer card, the project loan card, the pro card, and the commercial card. Most Home Depot customers are offered the consumer card at check out.
The Home Depot consumer credit card gives shoppers privileges like returns for up to one year and special financing. The home improvement retailer is currently offering $100 off a first qualifying purchase upon sign-up, which expires on July 29. Pro and commercial cards also qualify for the same offer.
Some Home Depot credit card holders say the offer is great for financing home projects. However, the standard 2% cash back isn’t as impressive. Instead, card holders get access to exclusive 10% coupons throughout the year to encourage continued membership.
Do Workers Get A Bonus For Credit Card Sign Ups?
Home Depot workers on the company’s subreddit share whether they receive incentives for pushing credit card sign-ups. As it turns out, each location handles its credit card sign-up rewards for workers differently.
“Our store does like ticket program like the arcade on the boardwalk. 15 tix gets you an eraser and all that. Each credit attempt gets you 2,” a worker explained.
“Cashiers do not get an incentive, someone else does when the store meets their goals that’s why they push so hard for credit cards,” another shared. “When the goals aren’t being met, they will begin to make offers like a gift card, lunch or back to the good old snack.”
While workers don’t have a financial incentive, many still encourage customers to sign up in-store.
“Apply in store with your favorite cashier or a random cashier, if you don’t have a favorite. That’ll be one shift thay won’t have the front end supervisor and head cashiers riding them about getting a credit card application because you were there,” one suggested.
A second said, “Tbh, end the day, it’s just another number whether you do it online or in store. But it does make our days a little better, especially for the ones that struggle to get a card.”
