A woman said that she examined a Pizza Hut slice closely and found something gross. Here's why she called the health inspector.
Pizza is supposed to be a fulfilling meal. There’s copious amounts of cheese, a handful of pepperonis, and a doughy crust. But what happens when there’s also an unexpected guest baked into the pie?
Florida content creator Tink (@tink_1616) posted a video that received more than 136,000 views. In it, the content creator tells her audience that she found a spider baked into the crust of a pizza she ordered from Pizza Hut, which prompted her to call a health inspector. Tink says that because of her experience, she won’t be having fast food anytime soon.
The Spider Pizza
Tink says that originally, she and one other person were looking through the box because there were a number of small, plastic beads in it. The “bits of plastic” were scattered around the box, with one even appearing to be baked inside the crust of a slice.
“These are little plastic bits of plastic. We found three of them,” Tink says. Then she holds up the pizza for closer examination. That reveals there is something grosser baked in the crust.
“As we were looking at them to see if there was any more plastic in it, we found a spider cooked into the pizza,” she adds.
She then throws the slice that she is holding down, and it lands flat back in the box. Unfortunately, she clarifies that she had already eaten enough of the pizza to be “full” before noticing the issue.
In an update added to her original video, Tink said she called a health inspector.
“Health inspectors have been notified, and this location is being inspected,” she added. “This location is in Florida, but this experience has made me never want to eat fast food ever again. I will be eating food cooked at home for the foreseeable future.”
What Were Those ‘Plastic Bits,’ Really?
Tink said that she found plastic “bits” inside her pizza box. But a few viewers had other theories.
“That’s from unclean pans,” one commenter said, referring to some of the black dots that baked into the pizza’s crust. “It’s carbon build up from the perforated sheets they cook the pizzas on…it stuck to your pizza. As for the spider…”
Another commenter said, “I used to work there, the black circles are burnt crust from the pans (they’re never scrubbed, just thrown into the washer) but no excuses for the spider.”
Should Consumers Worry About Pizza Hut?
So is there a greater issue with Pizza Hut’s cleanliness practices?
Generally, no. Not every Pizza Hut has the same management or employees. Certain locations may have different best practices than others. But there have been a few Pizza Hut locations that have failed routine health inspections. That lends credibility to questions about the chain.
A Pizza Hut in Ocala, Florida, temporarily closed after failing a routine health inspection done by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The Pizza Hut itself had four violations, of which one was marked as “high priority.” The location received another health inspection two days later and passed.
A Pizza Hut location in Perryville, Missouri, had a number of notes in its 2024 health inspection. A health inspector found “excessive burnt on food-like debris” baked into the pans. That mirrored what some commenters said about Tink’s pizza. In addition, a health inspector noted that there were multiple products kept after their discard date.
Is There An Issue With Food Safety As A Whole?
Rather than focusing on grievances with Pizza Hut, some viewers took aim at a bigger problem: food safety in the United States.
Multiple viewers claimed that food safety practices at fast food chains have deteriorated.
“Dont eat out,” one commenter said. “Why do you guys trust other ppl to care about what you eat. people dont care anymore enough for me to eat out.”
Another commenter added, “Tbh after 2023, can’t eat out unless it’s a local place that doesnt taste like sysco … barely trust the food out there anymore and it never tastes good enough for the cost either. sorry this happened.”
Fast-food workers do have one of the highest turnover rates in the country. That makes it harder to properly train employees and retain information, thus leading to increased risks to food safety. Increased time pressure can also lead to cut corners, thus decreasing food safety.
@tink_1616 Make sure to check the fast food you get. Or just stop getting fast food. No one is safe. #pizzahut #fastfood Update: Health inspectors have been notified and this location is being inspected. This location is in Florida but this experience has made me never want to eat fast food ever again. I will be eating food cooked at home for the foreseeable future. Stay safe out there folks 😂
