A babysitter at a home located just outside the city of Great Bend, Kansas got the shock of her life when the kid she was looking after asked her to check under the bed for monsters. Because when she did check under the bed, thinking nothing of it, she saw a man hiding there.

According to the Barton County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at around 10:30 p.m. on March 24. KSN News reports that the sheriff’s office said the 27-year-old man who was caught hiding under the child’s bed was identified as someone who used to live at the house, but had been barred from being there due to a protection from abuse order.

“One child complained there was a ‘monster’ under their bed. When the victim attempted to show the child there was nothing under the bed, she came face-to-face with a male suspect who was hiding there,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “An altercation ensued with the babysitter and one child was knocked over in the struggle. The suspect then fled the scene before deputies arrived.”

Deputies searched for the man through the night and into the morning before finally locating him near the home. After a brief foot pursuit, the man was taken into custody and was booked into the Barton County Jail on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, child endangerment, felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and violation of a protection from abuse order. He was being held in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

While the kid and the babysitter were apparently unharmed, one can only imagine how such a traumatic and frightening encounter will affect them for the rest of their lives. On the plus side, it could have been worse. At least the man under the bed wasn’t wearing a clown mask.
