A ‘Fart Opera’ Was Tragically Cut Out Of ‘Barbie’

While Barbie is already an incredibly bizarre film, especially considering its blockbuster status, it was actually almost even weirder.

During a recent interview, acclaimed director Greta Gerwig — who is now one of the hottest directors in Hollywood following the record-breaking success of Barbie — revealed that they tried to fit a “fart opera” into the film.

One of the casualties of that testing process on “Barbie” was the joke type that Houy and Gerwig have tried sneaking into all three of their collaborations but has always died about two-thirds through the edit.

“We’ve always tried to get in a proper fart joke and we’ve never done it. We had like a fart opera in the middle [of Barbie]. I thought it was really funny. And that was not the consensus,” Gerwid said.

“It was in the wrong place, too. We need to work it into a more significant narrative moment next time,” Houy said. [via IndieWire]

In case you didn’t already think Greta Gerwig rocked, I’m not sure what more you need other than hearing she tried to work fart jokes into Lady Bird and Little Women.

Barbie, which racked up an astounding $162 million domestically and another $194 million internationally during its opening weekend, is currently playing in movie theaters across the globe.

In addition to the Academy Award-nominated lead duo of Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the mega-hit — which is set to launch an entire “cinematic universe” of Mattel movies (yikes) — also stars Will Ferrell, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Emma Mackey, Kingley Ben-Air, Dua Lipa, Rhea Perlman, John Cena, Michael Cera, Helen Mirren, and more.

Up next for Gerwig, who reportedly has ambitions to be a blockbuster filmmaker on the scale of Christopher Nolan, will be directing two Chronicles of Narnia movies for Netflix

Check out an official trailer for Barbie, which is being projected as being a major contender at next year’s Oscars, below.
