With the release of the film just about two months away, Warner Bros. has released the main trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the film has become one of the most anticipated of the summer due to the talent involved and the gonzo approach it seems to be taking.
This latest trailer also gives fans their first real indication of what the plot of the film will be: Robbie’s Barbie and Gosling’s Ken leaving Barbieland to live in the “real world”.
Here is the official, albeit brief and vague, synopsis that was released with this latest trailer:
To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.
In addition to the leading duo of Robbie as Barbie and Gosling as Ken (the main Barbie and Ken, at least), the film stars Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Dua Lipa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emma Mackey, Michael Cera, Simu Liu, Helen Mirren, Will Ferrell, and more.
Speaking to Vogue Magazine for a profile interview earlier this week, Robbie also revealed that she wanted to cast Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot in the film because the Israeli actress embodies what she called “Barbie energy.” Just imagine those two sharing a screen together for a second.
Barbie isn’t the only film that Robbie — arguably Hollywood’s preeminent A-list actress these days — has coming out this summer, as she also has a role in Wes Anderson’s latest outing Asteroid City, which releases on June 16.
As for Gosling and his already-famed “Kenergy”, it was announced this week that Phil Lord and Chris Miller — the producing and directorial duo behind projects such as 21 Jump Street and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse — will be directing him in the adaption of the sci-fi novel Project Hail Mary, which is a book from The Martian scribe Andy Weir.
