A confused Best Buy customer took to TikTok after discovering that the Garmin watch her husband ordered had a strange replacement.
When she found out her partner got her a Garmin Watch from Best Buy, a woman couldn’t contain her excitement. But when she opened the box, she was met with a strange surprise.
When it comes to Best Buy and tech, it really is a mixed bag out there. One customer went viral after describing how they purchased an open-boxed TV, while another shared how a Best Buy worker tried to convince her to “recycle” a “broken” iPad, which, unbeknownst to her, actually worked. Still, in Suzanne Thibault’s (@suzannethibault) case, it became clear that bigger mistake was at play here.
In the video, Thibault, who is based in Massachusetts, starts by saying, “This message is for Best Buy and Best Buy only. My boyfriend bought me a Garmin watch for my birthday, and we just opened the package.”
She then shows viewers a clearly used smartphone.”This is not a Garmin watch,” she remarks. “This is someone’s phone. So we’re charging it.”

‘Shame’
Commenters were unimpressed.
“All packaging should be made so you can see the actual product,” one wrote.
“Shame on their customer service who didn’t check the box,” a second added. “Walmart did me dirty when my husband bought me an espresso machine. I used to work in returns at Kohls. I took one look at the box and said it was a return. My husband was shocked. I opened the box and used espresso beans was still in the machine.”
“Amazing ….. maybe they thought they could trade it in for the watch,” a third theorized.
While a fourth simply called it “insane.”
What Happened To The Garmin Watch?
Later on, the TikToker returned to the app to issue an update on the saga. Flashing the Garmin watch, she confirms she finally got it. As she goes on a run, she explains to viewers what happened next. She says that she called Best Buy on a Sunday after opening the shipping box and was told to wait until the distribution center was open on the Monday. They then called on the Monday, and the watch subsequently arrived.
Thibault adds that, as of Aug. 18, the day the video was posted, they still have the phone. She confirms that, to her knowledge, they were sending her a box to send the phone back.
How Do People’s Phones End Up In Packages?
With multiple Reddit posts detailing similar scenarios, it has become apparent that someone leaving their phone in a package is more likely than one might expect.
“IK they are p—–.” one Redditor commented.
“Probably spent the night tracking it,” another remarked.
A third said, “Should’ve been paying attention to their job and [not] messing around with their phone.”
Other Redditors encouraged these users to reunite the phone in question with its owners.
“Wait for a call, they will eventually call from someone else’s phone” a fourth predicted. “If low battery, charge it and wait for the call. Phones are valuable; not that much bc how much it costs, but because inside there are lots of memories. I would try my best to return it.”
A fifth said, “You should send them a message saying that you found their phone.” A sixth added, “Don’t forget to attach a picture of the phone to the message!”
Meanwhile, a fellow warehouse worker noted that it was an easy mistake to make. “Worker was talking on the business phone while packing and set it down then forgot most likely,” they noted. “I’ve done it with tape guns/ box cutters.”
