  • For the second time in less than a month, a tourist at Yellowstone National Park was gored by a bison.
  • Another tourist happened to be filming the close interaction at the time the bison gored the tourist who was attempting to run away while holding a child.
  • Tourists are asked to stay far away from Yellowstone’s bison and this footage is proof of why people should follow that advice.

There are two types of people who visit Yellowstone National Park. There are those who follow Yellowstone’s rules that tourists must stay 25 yards away from all big animals (including bison). And then there are the visitors who either willingly or unintentionally ignore those rules and get dangerously close to the animals.

If you were to set up a Google Alert for ‘Yellowstone Bison’ you would certainly think there have been more of the latter than the former lately. Twice in less than a month, a tourist has been gored by a bison in a vicious Yellowstone bison attack.

What makes this particular Yellowstone bison attack so chilling is there was a child involved. The person who ends up getting gored by the bison in their back is actually holding a child while (seemingly) attempting to run away from the dangerous scene. As far as we can tell, and as far as other reports I’ve seen so far, the child wasn’t harmed. There’s a Yellowstone NPS press release with some more information below.

Here’s what the Yellowstone NPS press release had to say:

  • A 34-year-old male from Colorado Springs, Colorado, was gored by a bull bison near Giant Geyser at Old Faithful on June 27.
  • The male was walking with his family on a boardwalk when a bull bison charged the group.
  • Family members did not leave the area, and the bull bison continued to charge and gored the male.
  • The male sustained an injury to his arm and was transported by ambulance to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
  • This incident remains under investigation, and there is no additional information to share.

Other recent close encounters with Yellowstone bison

The Instagram account that shared the Yellowstone bison attack video above has some astounding videos in its library. A lot of people seem to have zero qualms with getting dangerously close to these bison that can weigh over 2,000 pounds.

Dear reader, I don’t know you. But I do know that I don’t want you to be the victim of a Yellowstone bison attack. If you’re planning a trip to Yellowstone in the future, please keep your distance from these massive animals. It’s better for you, the animals, and the park if we all stay spread out.
