The Rock Finally Shares The First Image Of ‘Black Adam’, Announces Official Release Date

Warner Bros.

Dwayne Johnson has spent years playing a superhero: now he finally gets to be one with a cape.

After years of rumors and development, The Rock has finally revealed the release date and the first look at his upcoming DCEU flick Black Adam.

The Rock is a huge get for Warner Bros — whose DC Comics label has rebounded massively in recent years following the unmitigated disaster that was Justice League — as Black Adam will mark the iconic actor’s first foray into traditional comic book filmmaking.

A franchise in and of himself, the film is sure to be a box-office success with Johnson in the titular role. The only question that remains is whether or not it’ll be critically viable: ya know, more Wonder Woman and less Suicide Squad.

“I’m honored to join the iconic #DCUniverse and it’s a true pleasure to become, BLACK ADAM,” Johnson wrote on Instagram.

“BLACK ADAM is blessed by magic with the powers equal to SUPERMAN, but the difference is he doesn’t toe the mark or walk the line. He’s a rebellious, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people – but he does it his way. Truth and justice – the BLACK ADAM way. This role is unlike any other I’ve ever played in my career and I’m grateful to the bone we’ll all go on this journey together.”

Based on The Rock’s comments, it appears that Black Adam will be a darker superhero film than the typical DCEU affair, which sounds frankly excellent to us.

Black Adam — which is set to be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra — will hit theaters in the United States on Friday, December 22, 2021.
