Swimmer above sharks next to warning sign
There’s a pretty wide divide between the number of people who are afraid of being attacked by a shark and the number of victims who’ve actually suffered that fate. However, most beachgoers aren’t going to take any chances if they know they’re lurking off the shore, but that was not the case with one man in California who decided to stay put while six great whites were in his vicinity.
I feel like most people are aware that shark attacks are a statistically overblown concern in the grand scheme of things; in 2025, there were just 65 unprovoked incidents involving humans around the globe, nine of which resulted in a fatality.
The widespread fear of sharks can largely be traced back to Jaws, which has led countless people across multiple generations to believe you need to be worried about sharks that have acquired an appetite for human flesh and are constantly hunting for their next fix.
The fictional fish in that movie was a great white, a species that is one of the biggest offenders when it comes to shark attacks (along with the tiger and bull varieties). However, they are not exceptionally aggressive, and in the relatively rare situation where they do attack humans, bites are usually a one-and-done taste test that can be chalked up to curiosity or mistaken identity.
With that said, it’s hard to blame anyone for beating a path back to the shore if they discover they’re swimming in the waters where one is lurking. However, one guy in California seemed more than happy to tempt fate after he recently ended up in a fairly unnerving situation.

There are a number of drone owners who’ve decided to harness them to get a bird’s-eye view of the ocean, and they’ve been responsible for some cool videos that also serve as a reminder of the blissful ignorance that comes with not knowing what’s swimming near you when you take a dip.
That brings us to some footage that was recently captured by a YouTuber known as “TheMalibuArtist,” who recently dispatched his drone off the shore of an undisclosed beach in Southern California (it appears to be in the Santa Barbara area based on the oil rigs that could be spotted in the background).
The video primarily centers on a swimmer who seemed to be aware he was in the presence of at least one shark, although it did not appear he knew there were actually six of them in the area.
The drone captured him calmly treading and wading before dismissing a lifeguard who paddled out to his location to make sure he knew he had company, and one of the sharks appeared to swim less than ten feet away from him at one point.
You could argue this video serves to highlight the fact that sharks really aren’t something you have to worry about, but I can’t say I’d want to be the person setting that example in the wild.
