There were several moments over the past twenty-plus years where it didn’t look like Charlie Sheen was going to be with us much longer.

In 1998, at the age of just 32, Sheen had a stroke and was hospitalized in “serious condition” after overdosing on cocaine. He would later reveal that had once overdosed by injecting the cocaine.

In 2010, he was still at it as during a night of drinking and using cocaine he was removed from the Plaza Hotel by the NYPD after he reportedly caused $7,000 in damage to his suite.

He entered rehab in 2012, the third time in 12 months, in 2012 and was fired from Two and a Half Men after going wild on social media denigrating the series’s creator Chuck Lorre, claiming he was a warlock with tiger blood and Adonis DNA, all the while claiming he was “winning.”

Five years later, Sheen would reveal that that he had tested positive for HIV in 2011.

Fast forward to 2023 and Charlie Sheen now says he is about to celebrate six years of sobriety.

So what, after all of that (and much more) caused him to finally get straightened out?

“I loved drinking in the morning,” Sheen told People this week. “Loved some scotch in the coffee.

“One morning I’d forgotten my daughter had an appointment I’d promised to drive her to, and I’d already had a couple of pops that day.

“So had to call my friend Tony to take us. We got her there on time, but it broke my heart because she was in the backseat and I could just tell she was thinking, ‘Why isn’t dad driving?’ So I got home and sat with that for the rest of the day. And the next morning I just stopped.

“I think the first month I was like, I’m going to have give it a month, just see if I feel any better, and if my interactions with those that are closest to me improve,” he says. “And they did. And I’m like, all right, I’m going to go another month. And then it got traction. I had momentum.

“There was just instant evidence that this was the side I needed to be on. I couldn’t be in denial about it anymore.”

Now, at age 58, he says his life is “all about single dad stuff, and raising my 14-year-old twin boys Max and Bob.”

“I’m proud of the choices that I’ve made and the changes I’ve made to live a life today that will never look like that mess,” he added. “That was some alien version of myself.”

Like, perhaps, a “rock star from Mars?”
