ChatGPT will now be able to browse the internet, according to OpenAI, the company behind the program.

The development is obviously a major one as the program will no longer be limited to data compiled before September 2021.

The artificial intelligence startup also recently announced that ChatGPT is now able to have voice conversations and interact using images.

At this time, the update is only available to premium users on ChatGPT’s Plus and “Enterprise plans. While OpenAI said that the feature will “expand to all users soon,” they did not specify when the update would be made widely available.

OpenAI made the following statement on Twitter to announce the major update:

ChatGPT can now browse the internet to provide you with current and authoritative information, complete with direct links to sources. It is no longer limited to data before September 2021.

Browsing is particularly useful for tasks that require up-to-date information, such as helping you with technical research, trying to choose a bike, or planning a vacation.

ChatGPT now having an unfettered reign of the world wide web is obviously concerning, as anyone who has seen Avengers: Age of Ultron knows that Ultron getting access to the internet is basically the turning point of the film, as it is what pushes the AI program to decide to humanity is ultimately the biggest threat to humanity, thus radicalizing it and turning it against us.

Since launching last November, ChatGPT has ushered in a new age of artificial intelligence, as both the tool and the terms it uses have become relatively commonplace. As a result, OpenAI now has a valuation in the neighborhood of $90 billion.

AI writing programs have become particularly noteworthy as some publications have begun using them instead of writers. Furthermore, AI writing tools were a huge point of contention in the recent writers’ strike.
