While he’s best known for his role as the God of Thunder in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chris Hemsworth has also quietly starred in one of the most badass action films of the last decade: Extraction.
Released on Netflix in 2020, the sequel to the hit film is set to release this Summer, so Hemsworth recently said down with EW to tease the film.
The new film (coming to Netflix in June 2023) once again follows Hemsworth as lethal mercenary Tyler Rake, and the actor says the sequel’s stunts are bigger than ever, calling it “the most detailed and exhausting fight training I’ve ever been a part of.”
“We sort of went for the moon,” Hemsworth, 39, tells EW with a laugh. “In a very crowded world of action, I think we did something that’s very unique.” [via Entertainment Weekly]
Given that Hemsworth has not only starred in Extraction but also a bevy of Marvel Cinematic Universe films, the fact that he believes this is the most intense action work he’s ever done is really saying something.
The original Extraction, which is currently streaming on Netflix, almost stars David Harbour, Rudhraksh Jaiswal, Randeep Hooda, Golshifteh Farahani, Pankaj Tripathi, and more. At the time it was released, Netflix said Extraction became their most-watched original film of all time, with a reported viewership of 99 million households in its first month.
The film was directed by Sam Hargrave in his feature film debut. The sequel, which was written by Joe Russo, was also directed by Sam Hargrave. In addition to Hemsworth, Golshifteh Farahani and Adam Bessa reprise their roles from the original.
While Extraction 2 does not have an official release date at this time, reports indicate that the film will release on Netflix in June 2023.
