The first major, in-depth look at Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has been published in TotalFilm, and in the piece, director Christopher Nolan claims he was able to recreate the first nuclear explosion without the use of CGI, which certainly is… something.

“I think recreating the Trinity test [the first nuclear weapon detonation, in New Mexico] without the use of computer graphics, was a huge challenge to take on.”

“Andrew Jackson – my visual effects supervisor, I got him on board early on – was looking at how we could do a lot of the visual elements of the film practically, from representing quantum dynamics and quantum physics to the Trinity test itself, to recreating, with my team, Los Alamos up on a mesa in New Mexico in extraordinary weather, a lot of which was needed for the film, in terms of the very harsh conditions out there – there were huge practical challenges. Given its subject matter, Oppenheimer is set to be the most serious Christopher Nolan film ever made (outside of 2017’s Dunkirk) and could result in the 52-year-old Engish filmmaker raking up a bevy of nominations during next year’s awards season.

Oppenheimer will be the 11th studio film of Nolan’s storied career, following the likes of Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Tenet.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer — his first film at Universal Pictures following his divorce from Warner Bros. —  stars Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Josh Harnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Kenneth Branagh, Benny Safdie, Matthew Modine, David Krumholtz, Alden Ehrenreich, Josh Peck, Gary Oldman, Casey Affleck, Jason Clark, David Dastmalchian, and many more.

The film is currently scheduled to hit theaters in the United States on Friday, July 21, 2023.
