A man recently found out that a Cleveland Wyndham Hotel location in no longer allows locals to stay there. This was bad news for him.
Hotels are built and designed to host guests. So why on the earth would they reject rooms to locals? Staying in a hotel doesn’t always mean you are traveling on vacation. Sometimes your home is going through a renovation, the AC goes out, or you are in-between moves. However, a man recently found out that a Cleveland Wyndham Hotel location in no longer allows locals to stay there.
In a TikTok post with over 79,500 views, Buddie (@buddieee83) reveals the new hotel policy he discovered on the Wyndham Hotels check-in front desk.
The sign read, “Per our hotel policy, we no longer rent rooms to guests who reside locally in Cleveland and surrounding areas of the hotel. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”
Well, as it turns out, this was a major inconvenience for Buddie, who resides in the Cleveland area.
“Mannnnn what!!??’ he captioned the post.
This new policy left Buddie confused and frustrated him as a Cleveland resident.
In a conversation with BroBible, Buddie shared that he would frequently stay at the Wyndham Hotels to catch a break.
Buddie told BroBible, “I go there a few times a month because I stay with family right now until I’m able to get my own place. So it’s kinda where I always went to catch a break. Swim. Use the jacuzzi. It’s a nice hotel and it’s always the absolute cheapest in the area. If you go to any booking site, rooms are always $50-60 unless it’s a weekend or a big event in the city.”
He added that the front desk receptionist couldn’t explain why and when this policy went into effect.
“He couldn’t (or wouldn’t) tell me anything. His exact words were ‘We don’t rent rooms to Cleveland people anymore. Sorry,’” Buddie said.
In addition to the rejection of the room, Buddie said he wasn’t able to get a refund since he booked the room online through a booking agency.
“Then to top it off I wasn’t able to get refunded through the booking agency. It’s s— idk why they want to punish other people for randoms messing s— up. They take a hundred dollar deposit and keep a card on file for incidental so idk what they are achieving by this,” Buddie said.
Why Would A Hotel Ban Locals?
Hotel staff have seen some shocking things in hotels, such as one man who would regularly fill up his bathtub with pies. People will use hotel rooms to let loose and throw wild parties—oftentimes trashing the room without any consequences besides not collecting the deposit back.
One of the primary reasons for the ban of locals is to try to prevent illegal activities and massive parties at the property, WMBF News reports.
States including South Carolina and Missouri have laws in place where a hotel property has the right to deny someone a room as long as they don’t discriminate. A room cannot be denied for someone’s race, age, gender, or marital status.
So before booking that staycation, it would be wise to contact the hotel prior to confirm if they allow locals.
‘As A Front Desk Agent, I Don’t Disagree’
Viewers in the comment section reemphasized that locals will tend to trash rooms.
“Cuse locals be leaving rooms messy,” one TikTok commenter wrote.
“The amount of trouble locals cause at hotels is insane,” one added.
“This is really common in the hotel industry. Honestly, I wish my hotel did this because locals are the ones we have the most problems with and need to call the police on,” one commented.
“In Atlanta, it’s a thing for local people to pack into luxury hotel rooms every weekend and have parties and take up space at the bar,” one shared.
Hotel workers chimed in and vouched for the new hotel policy.
“As a front desk agent, I don’t disagree with said sign,” one commented.
“I totally understand – Sincerely, Front Desk Agent,” another added.
“This is crazy but as a hotel staff, I lowkey really get it,” one shared.
