Every little pocket of America where mosquitoes are prevalent like to tell themselves they have the worst. There are plenty of useful maps on the Internet and ultimately, ‘mosquito season’ arrives in different regions at different times. Mosquito season dictated by temperature, humidity, and rainfall.

The worst regions for mosquitoes are basically the entire Gulf Coast and wrapping around Florida (the worst state by far) up the Atlantic coast to the mid-Atlantic states. And then parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin are bad but they don’t actually compare to Florida and Louisiana. That’s all according to this map. But ultimately, Alaska isn’t on that map and they might have it worse than any state other than Florida…

Then there’s Russian mosquitoes. If you ever need any reason at all to never visit Eastern/Central Russia in the Summer, and I can’t imagine why you’d ever need a reason to avoid Russia, this video is it. It is unclear when this video is from but it’s grainy and appears to not be fresh. It popped up on X (née Twitter) a week or two ago and later made its way to the Ebaum’s World Instagram which is where someone sent it to me… And now I can say for certain that I will never, under any circumstances, visit central Russia in the Summer.

This is nothing new in Russia. As Spring turns to Summer and the rains and humidity give way to warm temperatures, the skies can run black from clouds of mosquitoes. Swarms of mosquitoes that are so dense people can have trouble breathing if they are engulfed by the blood-sucking creatures.

The mosquitoes are so bad in Russia’s Sakha Republic, which is home to Yakutsk where this video was filmed, that 60 Minutes traveled there a few years ago to see firsthand how bad life is for locals when mosquito season begins:

I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that none of those people have O-type blood. Mosquitoes are said to be particularly attracted to O- and O+ blood types, something I can attest to myself. Here in Florida, it is almost as if mosquitoes will fly through a crowd of people with military-grade seeking technology to find me and drink my blood… Did someone say ‘nightmare fuel’?

I am genuinely not sure I’d last a day in this part of Russia. And I’d say the same about Alaska in the late Spring and early Summer. In fact, mosquitoes are the primary reason I haven’t booked an arctic grayling fishing trip to AK yet because I don’t want to spend the week wearing a mosquito net bodysuit while fishing. That sounds like pure misery to me.

How do these people in Russia put up with that? If I didn’t own a car I’d simply start walking south until I got somewhere without mosquitoes. That would be literal hell on earth for me and would drive me to escape in ways I cannot even begin to describe.
