Los Angeles Man Discovers Costco Seafood Boil For $11.99 A Pound. Then He Cooks It: ‘And Not The Cheap Crabs!’

Costco has a new seafood boil deal, and the reviews for it are swimming in.

Lavelle (@thelavelleshow), a full-time Los Angeles-based influencer, posted a video that received more than 1.2 million views. In it, he explains how he saw Costco’s new seafood boil deal. He purchased it. Later, he posted a video to his page to tell his audience what he thought about it.

But many viewers had questions about the boil. Namely, is it worth the price? Or is it better to purchase crab, potatoes, and corn separately?

Costco Seafood Boil Review

The seafood boil itself contains wild Dungeness crab, shrimp, mussels, clams, red potatoes, and corn. The boil also has a spice packet with a Cajun-style seasoning.

Lavelle says that despite the seafood boil looking good, he debated whether it was worth the price.

“Me and Big Guy honestly debating if this was a bang for our buck,” he adds. “This is all we got for $63. Who really knows in this economy, though? It also came with a seasoning packet, cooking instructions, an aluminum pan, and a little lid.”

In a separate video, Lavelle tries the boil. The content creator says it was supposed to be ready in “six minutes.” In actuality, it took a little bit longer to prepare. He noted that the preparation of the boil was “simple.”

Finally, Lavelle tried each of the offerings inside the seafood boil. The content creator liked the sides, the seasoning, and the seafood. He even liked the mollusks in the boil, despite saying, “I don’t really know if I like mussels and clams and, and those type of things.”

But was the seafood boil worth purchasing?

Wait, How Much Does The Costco Seafood Boil Cost?

While some viewers were fans of the new Costco option, others pointed out an issue with its offerings. According to some commenters, those who purchase the boil from Costco are paying $11.99 a pound for “potatoes.”

The price stuck out to commenters who saw Lavelle’s review.

“63 American dollars for that?? And then you had to season?!? I’ll call you back later friend, I love you bye,” a commenter said.

Wild Dungeness crab, according to Costcofan, can cost $15 to $20 per pound. Clams, shrimp, and mussels each cost between $4 and $12 per pound. So, Costcofan argues that if a customer were to purchase each ingredient in the boil separately, it would cost less than purchasing the Costco boil.

But other reviewers have said the Costco seafood boil is a “scam” on platforms such as Reddit. The Takeout found that at one particular Costco seafood roadshow, Dungeness crab cost $11.99 per pound on its own. The publication pointed out that customers would get more meat from just purchasing the crab, sans inexpensive vegetables like corn and potatoes.

Ultimately, though, most reviewers determined that the seafood boil is a product that’s built for convenience. For a quick seafood experience that’s ready in an incredibly short period, it’s hard to beat.
