A woman shocks viewers after discovering what appears to be a headstone buried next to their shed. Then, her discovery provides answers for a nearby grieving family.
On July 26, Sydney Paige (@the.centerfold1) posted a TikTok of their discovery, which has amassed 2.4 million views as of Sunday. “So much for building a chicken coop behind the shed,” the caption reads.
In the video, a man walks behind his shed and approaches a hole he appears to have dug. Then, he begins to sweep the dirt off what appears to be a grave, with the names of two individuals.
Who Did The Headstone Belong To?
In a follow-up video, Paige explained that the discovery happened shortly after they moved into the home in April. The area behind the shed had been cluttered with leftover items from previous tenants. Eventually, the couple decided to clear and level the ground to make space for a chicken coop.
She explains that her boyfriend was not simply digging. He was leveling the surface when he uncovered what looked like a buried headstone.
“There were only a few inches of dirt really covering it,” she explained, adding that runoff from the nearby hill likely caused soil to build up over time.
Although she was initially stunned, she quickly realized it was “not a grave. It is just a headstone.”
Paige additionally explains that she received a message from a woman who recognized it as her grandparents’ missing headstone. According to the family, they had been searching for it for about a year and weren’t sure whether it had been lost or stolen.
Paige contacted the woman’s mother, Jenny, and immediately agreed to return it. She added that Louise, whose name appears on the marker, died in February and is buried nearby. However, John, the other name on the headstone, is still living.
Why Was There A Headstone In Her Backyard?
When someone discovers what appears to be a headstone on private property, property owners should contact local law enforcement or the county coroner. This is especially pertinent if they believe human remains could be present. If it appears to be only a displaced monument, they should notify the cemetery, funeral home, or local officials so the marker can be identified and returned to its rightful location.
Although relatively uncommon, theft of headstones and vandalism do occur. The nonprofit Cemetery Conservators for United Standards notes that cemeteries frequently experience vandalism, including stolen or displaced monuments, particularly in older or isolated burial grounds. In some cases, thieves target bronze plaques or metal ornaments for their scrap value. Stone markers, however, are more often moved as acts of vandalism, pranks, or during attempted thefts that are later abandoned because of their weight.
There are several possible explanations for how the headstone ended up behind the couple’s shed. However, without an investigation, it is impossible to know exactly what happened.
