SNL UK produced its funniest episode yet with host Cynthia Erivo
Saturday Night Live is a pillar of American culture, having been on the air for over 50 years now. The United Kingdom version, by comparison, is less than a year old.
Like the last decade of the American version of the show, the results of Saturday Night Live: UK have been a mixed bag thus far. The concluding episode of the first half of its second season, though, produced two of the funniest sketches that have been made on either side of the pond this year.
Two of the skits from the Cynthia Erivo-hosted episode have gone massively viral on social media, with many claiming they represent the highlight of SNL: UK‘s brief stint on the air.
The Cynthia Erivo-hosted episode of Saturday Night Live: UK featured two of the funniest sketches that the series has produced so far
The first popular sketch was a Nollywood parody of Wicked — which Erivo starred in as Elphaba and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress — titled Nigerian Wicked. On SNL UK’s Instagram post of the sketch, The Bear star Ayo Edebiri said the skit was “genius,” while Guardians of the Galaxy franchise star called it “incredible.” Movie star Kerry Washington also chimed in with praise.
The second was a performed parody of pop music that Erivo performed alongside cast member Annabel Marlow. The song, performed as a duet, saw Erivo brag about all of the wonders her baby-maker is capable of, while Marlow’s description of hers was hilariously more subdued. The delivery of the intros to her two verses — “And mine’s different to that” and “Whereas for me” — has been living rent-free in my head since Saturday.
After premiering in March — Saturday Night Live icon Tina Fey was the debut host — SNL: UK was renewed for season two in May. Season two premiered on September 12 and will now be on hiatus until it resumes in January.
