Daft Puk’s Thomas Bangalter On Why He’d Never Use Artificial Intelligence

Elsewhere in the Arts, Thomas Bangalter who was half the duo of Daft Punk between 1993-2021 until they disbanded, discussed why Artificial Intelligence has no place in his creative process. This came during a recent interview for Chanel.

“Architecture is probably the most creative form of all art forms because there’s no more limits between fiction and reality. And you were actually able to (take) that fiction and make it a reality. We are so fortunate to be able to enter the ‘fictional mind’ of these creators and put it into words, you know.”

“My relationship to creation and my relationship to art is mostly happening at a deeper level, which does not express itself through words. That’s probably why I’m not really interested in the creative usage of artificial intelligence for many reasons.”

“But the main one probably is because it goes through a verbal expression which is prompting, and I feel really the most interesting part of the creative process is happening not at all on an intellectual level or on an expressive level, where you’re actually going through a process which is about understanding your feelings. And I feel it’s the same, you know, where we’re sitting here (talking) about architecture.”

“So I like this idea when I was taking some time to answer you that I’m actually at a loss of words because it’s exactly that thing that I’m trying to, to feel.”

I know what the haters are thinking… ‘of course AI could create a song like Around The World‘ and that is somehow proof that AI has a place in creation:

As I mentioned above, there are still enormous portions of the global population that appreciate knowing something was created by a human being and not a robot. It is why people seek out artisan crafts, shop directly with farmers when possible, praise farm-to-table production, Etsy continues to thrive, and musicians who push back against AI use in the industry are praised.

That does not mean that Artificial Intelligence cannot play a crucial role in Music and the Arts for generations to come. It most certainly will. But it is hard to envision a world where humans will not celebrate fellow human beings creating masterpieces.
