A Texas woman says a Dallas restaurant cut off her table’s alcohol service over an alleged marijuana smell. She denies smoking and says the group was racially profiled.
A Texas woman says a Dallas restaurant cut off alcohol service to her table after a manager claimed to smell marijuana near the restroom. But the woman says neither she nor her friends had been smoking. She believes her group was racially profiled, later adding that she has since found previous allegations of discriminatory treatment involving another restaurant owned by the same hospitality group.
Andrea Chantel (@andreachantel) says the confrontation happened at Maroma, a Mexican restaurant in Dallas owned by Big Dill Hospitality. Video of the exchange quickly went viral, receiving more than 17 million views in two days. Maroma also received a number of negative reviews on platforms such as Yelp.
The restaurant defended its staff’s decision and said employees acted after detecting a strong marijuana odor and raising concerns about possible drug use inside the restaurant.
Why Did Maroma Cut Off The Table’s Drinks?
Chantel says that immediately upon arriving at the restaurant, her group was told they could not stay long. According to her, staff members let her know that there were existing reservations that had to be tended to first.
Chantel says this was fine and that she clarified to the staff that her group was primarily there for drinks, not food. Upon being seated, Chantel says that she asked where the bathroom was.
Unfortunately, there were only two stalls, one for men and one for women. After waiting a few minutes to use the women’s stall, Chantel says she decided to just use the men’s bathroom. From there, she says she returned to her table, and everything seemed normal.
The Manager Says She Smelled Marijuana
About 15 minutes later, however, Chantel says her group was approached by the restaurant’s general manager.
“She informs us that there had been complaints because the woman’s bathroom reeked of marijuana. And based off her observation, she was no longer able to serve us alcohol, and I had been the only one that had went to the restroom,” Chantel says. Chantel recalls that she didn’t use the woman’s restroom. Additionally, she says she told the general manager that she doesn’t smoke.
In Chantel’s now-viral video, a restaurant manager, who is standing by their table, says, “I can smell you. … I can’t serve you because … I smelled it,” referring to marijuana.
Chantel pans across the table with her camera to share the reactions of the three other guests, who look in equal measure defeated and flabbergasted. Chantel asks each guest if they smoked. They shake their heads no. Then, Chantel turns the camera toward herself to say that she doesn’t smoke.
The restaurant manager then says, “I can only go off of the observation.” Chantel asks, “You’re going off of what? You’re going off of what? You’re going off of…”
After some back and forth, the woman tells Chantel that “I’m coming to you calmly … and telling you that I can’t serve because I can smell marijuana, and I won’t be serving any other alcohol.”
The clip then cuts off after the manager reiterates the no service policy.
Maroma Defends Its Decision
Maroma responded directly to Chantel’s video in a public statement posted to Instagram.
“We are aware of a video circulating on social media regarding a recent incident at Maroma, and we want to provide important context,” a representative wrote. “Our team made the decision to discontinue alcohol service to the guests involved after staff observed a strong odor of marijuana and had concerns regarding marijuana use in the restaurant restroom.”
The statement did not clarify whether other guests were asked not to drink that night. Toward the end of the post, however, a representative added, “A short video shared online does not always provide the full context of an interaction. We felt it was important to provide that context and stand behind our team’s responsibility to protect the experience and safety of everyone at Maroma.”
After seeing the post, Chantel posted a public video of her purchasing a drug test at CVS Pharmacy. The content creator stated that she was “coming with receipts.” She also clarified that she sought legal counsel.
She Points To Previous Allegations Against The Restaurant Group
After witnessing Maroma’s response firsthand, Chantel did some additional sleuthing. She then pointed to other allegations involving the hospitality group.
“I do wanna note that Maroma is owned by Big Dill Hospitality, which also owns Casa Brasa,” she says, alleging, “I have had some conversations with former Casa Brasa employees who also state that, in fact, this establishment does discriminate and racially profile Black people.” BroBible has not independently verified those allegations.
The Nerd Stash covered a previous incident in 2026, wherein a Black customer was asked not to take photos at Casa Brasa. The restaurant allegedly allowed other guests to take photos. Blessida, the customer in question, posted a video to her TikTok calling out the establishment. Several commenters said that the situation warranted a discrimination case.
“Texas is very racist. Period,” one commenter said.
Some commenters also interpreted the encounter as racial profiling.
“They might as well put on [their] google and out front ‘NO COLORED ARE ALLOWED’ at this point,” a viewer said.
Another commenter added, “I am a YT woman in Colorado and have seen so many things about how racist the restaurants are. It’s obviously a them problem.”
@andreachantel I genuinely never thought I’d have to post something like this. We went to Maroma in Dallas expecting to have a normal night out, and instead walked away feeling racially profiled and completely humiliated. The craziest part? I recorded the interaction. This is what happened. Watch it and decide for yourself. Being a paying customer should never come with being treated differently because of how you look. Dallas, we need to talk about this. @maroma #DallasTikTok #DallasTX #DallasRestaurants #RacialProfiling #BlackTikTok
